What should be the reason for a TF?

My thoughts exactly. Free-will TF's really have to involve furry or TF fans, which really limits you in terms of believable triggers. (IE what are the odds of a transformation happening to a TF fan, unless the character happens to find something or someone special, or it happens to the whole world?)

Of course, it's not impossible to write a good willing TF story. But it does sound like it would be an obstacle for a believable story.

On a professional level (involving art and story ideas), I agree that there isn't much to go on when the TF is done willingly. However, does TF's of free-will just have to imply thinking about it, willing it, and *poof* the change begins? To have the willingness to TF into a different being means carrying the responsibility to accept the changes AND consequences that are sure to follow. What if the person who willingly decides to want to transform into something else can't do it by will-power alone? You can then come up with any intriguing and fun ideas of how the person ventures into getting what he wants. Will Power then can mean either changing by your own will "or" deciding that you are willing to TF by accepting the method you choose to change...

I hope I am coming along clear with this. Pardon me if this sound confusing...

On a personal note, I would love to be able to change at will whenever I wanted to. If I could change; take a moment out of daily routine of my own human life, and live as something else, that would be lovely

Sure, free will doesn't mean TFed by pure will alone. In fact, it rarely does.

The problem, though, is that usually it's just us TFers who would actually seek out a means of transformation. And stories about just such an absolute minority hardly ever seem plausible.

So it's really more about how believable the story is, rather than how compelling it might be.

For instance, if you take any historical story and replace the main charactor with a martian. No matter how great the story is, it's still gonna be disconcerting that the main charactor just doesn't seem believable.

I think either an amulet or costume is good. Free will is boring and pointless . When its unexpected, it's exciting.

How about via unknowing deliberate transferal? Sexually transmitted for instance. Say a girl goes out gets and meets a guy at a club not knowing he's a werewolf, they fool around and one way or another some of his fluids get mixed up with her be it a bite mid coitus or she gets a load from unprotected sex. Morning after she goes on her way oblivious, and doesn't see him again. Next full moon she's out and about and voila, fur covered female. The male spread his species one way or another, doing the same thing all over town.

I didn't see that movie, what's it about?

A brother and sister end up getting scratched or bit by a werewolf while trying to help out a woman stuck in a car accident (which she ends up becoming dinner). The next two or three days they start having nightmares and start showing symptoms of becoming a Werewolf while they try to struggle through their everyday life (the sister managing a hollywood party while dealing with mystery executive boyfriend/ the brother trying to be popular and get the girl that his worst enemy hangs with and calls the brother queer.) Throughout the film, the Werewolf seems to be stalking them and hunting people around them. The movie itself tries to set a errie atmosphere but can't stop with the lame jokes. The Werewolf TF is pretty neat; could've been less CG though.
